On 31st January 2025, the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam distributed essential farm equipment to various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) across Meghalaya. The beneficiary organizations included Iasynroplang FPO Co-operative Society Ltd., Ri Lajong FPO, Shipara SHG, Mawrong, Nangteishaphrang Co-Operative Society, Nartiang Village Organization, Pynkulang Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and Sohphoh Integrated Village Cooperative Society.
        The distributed equipment comprised Power Tillers, Mini Power Weeders, Turmeric Washers, and Turmeric Slicers, aimed at promoting agricultural mechanization and enhancing productivity. Power Tillers and Mini Power Weeders facilitate efficient land preparation and weeding, significantly reducing labor and operational time. These machines are particularly advantageous for small and medium-sized farms, contributing to increased productivity and timely agricultural operations.
        The Turmeric Washer and Turmeric Slicer were provided to assist in post-harvest processing for turmeric-producing groups. The washer ensures thorough cleaning of turmeric rhizomes, while the slicer offers uniform cutting, which is essential for drying and value addition. By reducing manual labor and improving the quality of processed turmeric, these machines are expected to enhance the market value of the produce.
        This initiative by ICAR RC for NEH Region underscores its commitment to empowering farmers through mechanization, improving agricultural productivity, and supporting rural livelihoods. The provided equipment will contribute to more efficient farming practices and increased income for the beneficiary groups.
